Prioritizing Resident Safety in North Houston
The North Houston District (NHD) is committed to creating a safer, more secure environment for its residents and businesses through collaborative efforts, innovative programs, and strong partnerships with local law enforcement agencies.
Since 2015, these strategies have led to a steady decline in crime and an increased sense of safety throughout the area. Tracy Harrison serves as Vice President, Public Safety for the District and recently offered an update on the latest initiatives and programs making an impact in our community.
March on Crime
The month of March will once again feature North Houston District’s week-long March on Crime program. It’s a community-focused and proactive approach to preventing crimes before they occur. From March 10 through March 14, 2025, local law enforcement and public safety advocates will be reaching out to the residents of apartment communities within the District’s boundaries as a part of NHD’s Safe Apartment Pledge.
“Our teams typically connect face-to-face with 500-700 residents during the effort,” said Harrison. “We focus on providing information about the resources available, crime prevention tips and engaging with residents in a way that increases their comfort with us and makes it easier for them to get the answers they need.”

“Community outreach is key to doing our jobs well because we can’t fight crime on our own,” added Harrison. “We want residents to call and let us know when there is a problem. We need them to be willing to say something when they see something.”
Preventing Theft and Providing Solutions
The teams will also be working to reduce vehicle burglaries by conducting inspections throughout the complexes and surrounding areas. Residents may find a report card on their car letting them know how they fared at minimizing the likelihood of becoming a target for thieves. A passing score requires keeping a vehicle locked and removing valuable belongings or placing them out of sight.
Promoting the Crime Stoppers hotline will be another point of emphasis during the District’s March on Crime program. Crime Stoppers offers an anonymous tip line residents can use to report any helpful details they may have regarding a crime or the person responsible for it. Tipsters may be eligible for a monetary reward based on the information provided. The hotline and website also offer a variety of resources on crime prevention. District residents can access Crime Stoppers of Houston by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting crime-stoppers.org.
A Growing Legacy of Public Safety
For more than 20 years, the North Houston District has invested in innovative approaches and strong partnerships to reduce crime and foster a safer, more connected community. Whether through funding the HPD North Belt Division headquarters or hosting outreach events like March for Crime, NHD remains steadfast in its mission to build a community where everyone feels safe.
“Together—with the dedication of law enforcement agencies, community involvement, and these forward-thinking programs—the North Houston District can continue to thrive as a secure and vibrant place to live, work, and visit,” said Harrison.
