The North Houston District is taking action to improve safety along Kuykendahl Road, a prominent road that terminates at the I-45 feeder road near Rockstar Energy Bike Park. Known as the Kuykendahl Curve, this section of the roadway has been the site of numerous incidents where speeding vehicles lose control and leave the roadway. Despite previous safety enhancements, such as increased signage and additional speed limit signs, the problem has persisted, with several accidents causing repeated damage in 2022 and 2023.

To address these concerns, the North Houston District has initiated a safety improvement project to protect both park visitors and the substantial infrastructure in the area, including an above-ground 6-inch backflow prevention system that serves bike park. Temporary barricades have been installed while the District works with the City of Houston on final permitting approvals for a permanent guardrail that will enhance the area’s safety and aesthetics.

Orange temporary barricades stretch along a grassy area near a curved road. Speed caution signs are visible in the background, and a fence separates the road from Rockstar Energy Bike Park. Trees and overcast skies frame the scene.

Construction bids have been submitted, and the installation of the permanent guardrail is scheduled to begin on November 1, with an anticipated 21-day construction period, weather permitting.

Aesthetic and Functional Safety Enhancements

The new guardrail is designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating a visually appealing gateway to the District and its attractions, including Rockstar Energy Bike Park and North Houston Skatepark. Long-term Investment in Safety and Cost Savings

This project is not just about immediate safety improvements; it’s also an investment in the District’s future. By installing a permanent guardrail, District leadership aims to reduce the exponential costs of repeatedly repairing damaged infrastructure and water leaks caused by speeding vehicles.

Drive Safely Around Kuykendahl Curve

We urge everyone traveling through the Kuykendahl Curve area to exercise caution, especially during the construction phase. Please slow down, be mindful of the temporary barricades, and remember that young people are riding bikes and park users are enjoying shaded walking trails just beyond the fence at Rockstar Energy Bike Park.

Stay tuned to our website for updates on the progress of this important safety project. Together, we can make the North Houston District a safer place for everyone.
