North Houston District Provides Four New eBikes for Houston Police Department North Belt Division

Prioritizing Safety in North Houston

North Houston District’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of businesses and residents in the area go back more than 20 years when the local crime was dramatically reduced with the opening of a public safety center that put more police officers closer to the District. Today, the North Houston District spearheads multiple innovative partnerships and projects that help prevent crime, build community, and promote positive interaction with law enforcement agencies.

Partners in Crime Prevention

The North Houston District was proud to sponsor the purchase of four new eBikes to be used by the Houston Police Department North Belt Division for bike patrols in the area. While the District steps up security seasonally every year in main thoroughfares, parks, and trails, this is the first year that it has incorporated eBikes into its public safety strategy. HPD Bike Patrol starts in the North Houston District on March 1, 2025.

“When springtime rolls around and the weather is warmer, there are more people out and about utilizing our parks and trails to stay active.

Once school gets out for the summer, there are many children outside playing. The added layer of security helps keep our community safe and allows residents to take advantage of the District’s many green spaces,” says North Houston District's Vice President of Public Safety, Tracy Harrison.

Leading the Way on Safety & Security

The use of eBikes by Houston law enforcement is a fairly new concept. The purchase by North Houston District marks the first time that a Houston Metro-area management district has provided a fleet of eBikes for an HPD division.

Houston Police Department Bike Patrol is an additional patrol option to police vehicles in stations where bikes are available. Officers who use the eBikes go through a specialized class and training to master the operation and capabilities of an eBike.

Benefits of an eBike include a rechargeable energy source and additional speed that helps patrol officers cover more ground in less time. “Bike Patrol officers can now leave from the station and take the bike wherever they need to go—they don’t have to drive their squad car to an area and then bike to save time and physical exhaustion,” says Harrison.

The eBikes can reach speeds of nearly 30 miles per hour, making it much easier for patrolling officers to cover the 12-square-mile area of the District.

Harrison explains that the energy efficient eBikes are particularly useful when patrolling in the heat, enabling officers to go longer distances with less physical demand on their bodies than standard bicycles. “We’re proud to equip the HPD North Belt Division with top-of-the-line tools and technology to reinforce our strong collaborative partnership and work together to continue strengthening safety and security in the North Houston District,” she shares.

Sourced Locally

Whenever possible, the North Houston District tries to source vendors and partners from within District borders. But when that’s not an option, other Houston businesses are the next best thing. The District sourced the new eBikes from Euphree, a brand with a national footprint and a manufacturing facility in Houston. Harrison was able to meet with the owner in person to discuss the bike specifications of the Stellar Falcon Mid Step model and the unique needs for a public safety use case.

After working together with the Houston Police Department to go through the planning process and due diligence of researching options, the North Houston District is thrilled to see the eBikes put to use. Keep an eye out for the new eBike fleet as seasonal patrols ramp up this Spring and Summer!
