North Houston Gateways Program Nearing Completion with Phase 6 Monument Signs

The North Houston District is advancing toward the completion of its multi-phase Gateways Program, which introduces 21 new monument signs to enhance the area’s identity and create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, businesses, employees, and residents. These gateway monuments and branded signage symbolize the District’s commitment to care and investment while improving safety and aesthetics at major intersections.

Phase 6: Final Milestone in Progress

The sixth and final phase is currently in design for West Hardy Road and Beltway 8, located on the eastern boundary of the District. This marks the culmination of a years-long initiative to beautify prominent intersections and thoroughfares that welcome travelers into the District.

Leveraging Strategic Partnerships

Phase 5 of the Gateways Project exemplified collaboration. Partnering with the Greens Crossing Property Owners Association, the District developed a cost-effective solution to refresh existing monument signs. By leveraging established landscaping, lighting, and irrigation infrastructure, the project rebranded key roads in the Northwest Quadrant near Greens Parkway at a fraction of the cost of wholly new gateways.

The refreshed signs align with the sleek, modern aesthetic of the newer gateways, providing a cohesive look across the District. Key intersections enhanced during Phase 5 include:

  • Ella Boulevard & Gears Road

Illuminating the District

Native landscaping accents all gateway signs, with nine of them featuring backlit designs for added visibility and style. These illuminated monuments automatically light up at dusk and even have color-changing capabilities—perfect for celebrating events like a Houston Astros World Series win!

The backlit signs are strategically located at high-traffic entrances throughout the District’s four quadrants, particularly near I-45 and Beltway 8:

  • Rankin Road (East and West of I-45)
  • Imperial Valley Drive (North and South of Beltway 8)
  • Greens Crossing Boulevard (North of Beltway 8)
  • Ella Boulevard (South of Beltway 8)
  • West Road (East and West of I-45)
  • Greenspoint Drive (North of Beltway 8)

Placemaking as a Priority

The Gateways Project was inspired by the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Livable Centers Study, completed in 2020, which identified impactful community improvements. Through grants, partnerships, and innovative programs, the North Houston District has transformed its vision into reality.

As the Gateways Program nears completion, it reflects the District’s ongoing dedication to strategic placemaking. These signs signal that the area is well-maintained, thoughtfully developed, and ready to welcome commuters, residents, and investors alike.
