Where Art Meets Community
Public art is an important part of the North Houston District’s commitment to placemaking. Guided by the District’s Public Art & Placemaking Report, the program incorporates artistic elements into parks, trails, streetscapes, and other public spaces to create distinctive destinations that inspire community pride and leave a lasting impression on visitors. Together with the N. Houston Development Corp’s investment in public art, these efforts help strengthen the District’s identity and enhance the community’s public spaces.
Trail Art: Turtle Murals
North Houston District partnered with UP Art Studio on Trail Art Turtle Murals in early 2023 as part of the District’s Public Art Program expansion. Hear from NHD President Greg Simpson and UP Art Studio Muralist Robin Munro about how they think the project will impact surrounding residents. The trail segment featured in this video is at Greens Road, adjacent to Thomas R. Wussow Park, and there’s more to see where the trail meets Imperial Valley Drive.
Spreading Knowledge
Spreading Knowledge is the North Houston District’s first commissioned mural and marks the beginning of the District’s Public Art Program. Created by artist Dual at the Harris County Public Library Aldine Branch, the mural reflects the District’s commitment to placemaking by transforming everyday spaces into vibrant community destinations. The project was made possible through a partnership with Up Art Studio and the Harris County Public Library Aldine Branch, demonstrating how collaboration and public art can enrich the community while creating a stronger sense of place.
